Today I went to the city (NYC) to meet a friend of mine whom I got to know over Twitter (which leads me to a separate topic that relationships on social media are quite real). When I got to the subway station, I went to fill my metro card and said “Good Morning” to the lady manning the booth. I asked her how’s she doing today and told her have a great day. During our brief conversation, she kept giving me this look as if I lost my mind. As if I was rude for asking about her and her well being.
When I got on the subway, I was thinking, is this the society we created? Sure, I am in NY. Not exactly homey at times but still…to the point where saying “good morning” is out of place? This is not the first time I felt people looked at me weirdly because I greeted them when they do not even know me.
Horrific I thought.
On the way back home, I passed this same lady who was manning the booth. As I walked by she called me over (via the intercom) and said to me “Sir, I know I was looking at you weirdly this morning. However, I see hundreds a people a day and all I hear is complaints, requests and whining. No good morning. No one asking “how are you doing”. When you started acting nicely, I will admit, I was shocked. I thought maybe something is wrong with you. So I am happy I got to see you again now to thank you for asking about me. It made my day. And to prove it, I remembered your face out of the hundreds out there today”.
Sometimes caring goes a long way.
